In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen

How to Carve a Wooden Pipe

Before starting the project, artists are encouraged to gather and prepare all the materials that will needed for this activity. The most important material in the project is Bruyere wood. If you cannot find Bruyere wood, you can substitute it with any type of wood or a briar block. Aside from the wood, you will also need carving materials and tools like a milling cutter, a chisel, a grafter, a sandpaper, a saw, a Dremel tool, a drill and a pencil.

After preparing the tools and materials, you need to choose a design for the pipe. You can surf the Internet or you can look at magazines and books to have ideas about the different designs used for the pipe. If you saw the design from a website, you need to print it so that you can look at it any time you forgot the details of the design.

Visualize the appearance of the finish product. Get the pencil and outline the design in the wood. Get the saw and use it to cut or remove the excess part of the wood. To avoid experiencing hassles, make sure that you follow the outline carefully when you cut the wood. Draw a circle at the wider part of the pipe. Draft another circle in the first circle. These illustrations are important since the figures will serve as the guide when making the hollow portion of the pipe.

Draw the mouthpiece at the narrow part of the wood. Get the drill and use it to cut the holes of the wooden pipe. Before drilling, make sure that you know the exact measurements of the pipe to make it more interesting and enticing. Get the chisel and use it to finish the inner part of the pipe. Afterwards, cut excess wood with the use of the saw. Use the sandpaper to finish the exposed or outer part of the finish product. Polish it with a lacquer or sealant to enhance its appearance.
